Message from the Board Chair

October 2016

Two weeks ago I was privileged to graduate, along with 7 other local Marin organizations, from an intensive 6 month Sustainability Circle, the product of which was a comprehensive 5 year sustainability plan for our respective organizations.

The Sustainability Circle program is the brainchild of Elliot Hoffman, founder of cult Bay Area bakery Just Desserts.  Elliot was a pioneer in sustainable business practices, and after selling Just Desserts, Eliot has dedicated his life and professional career to helping organizations achieve long term economic sustainability through environmental and social initiatives.  Participants include Straus Family Creamery, Lagunitas Brewing, Pixar, San Diego Chargers, Hilton Hotels, Goodwill, City of San Jose, and many more.  To date over 300 organizations have participated, with average 5 year projected cost savings of $342,000, 1.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity, and 3.8 million gallons of water.

Elliot’s organization is called REV, and they have been San Rafael Chamber member since early 2015, when they joined the Chamber’s Green Business Committee for the purpose of recruiting Marin organizations to participate in a newly launched Marin Sustainability Circle.

That Circle has completed, and our 8 organizations will now go to work, with REV’s continued coaching and assistance, on implementing our detailed and comprehensive 5 year Sustainability Action Plans.  Marin participants include San Rafael Chamber members Mill Valley Film Festival and JHS Properties, along with Marin Municipal Water District, Marin Catholic HS, Driver’s Market, San Domenico School, Urban Brothers Painting, and Marin Primary School (tuition sponsorship provided by chamber member CPI Real Estate Development).  Chamber member PG&E provides primary funding for the REV program, including major educational content around energy efficiency improvements.

REV is an incredibly important program and I am proud that the San Rafael Chamber and its Green Business Committee played such an important role in launching the Marin Sustainability Circle.  I am a strong believer that we must each take individual responsibility to lead and model sustainability for our families, our community, and our professional organizations.  Show your kids, co-workers, and bosses your passion, and they will follow you!

REV is actively recruiting for their next Sustainability Circle.  Go to revsustainability.com to learn more, or contact me ([email protected]) or Susan Hoppe (susanhrevsustainability.com) from REV for more details.
