As members of Hera Hub, a co-working space for women entrepreneurs, most of us are doing business on a relatively small scale compared to the Walmarts, Qualcomms, and Patagonias of this world. Incorporating sustainability into our business model and operations is often very low on our priority list and we may feel that it is something best left until later – when we have scaled up, when we are a more established business. I have learned though, that embedding sustainability into any size business early on will pay off significantly even in the short term.

In 2014, Mission Federal Credit Union staff Lisa Chappell, VP Purchasing & Facilities, and Lauren Francis, Facilities Management Assistant, participated in a TMS San Diego Sustainability Circle, presenting their Sustainability Action Plan to fellow Circle participants in October. For 10 years I directed the StopWaste Business Partnership which operates in the East San Francisco Bay Area. More often than not, an employee would contact us to diagnose their company’s situation and to set up a waste reduction and recycling program. But when the “champion” left the company, the successful efforts frequently fell apart.
